Cian was starting to regret her decision to come out with Hannah. Out of all her friends, she wasn’t exactly closest to her, but Hannah had insisted on dragging her out that night. Cian’s other, closer friends were either busy or… well, some of them just didn’t like Hannah enough to go clubbing with her after past experiences.
”Seriously, I’m a little envious. All you have to do is mention to any of of these guys that you’re a virgin and they’re going to want to take you home,” Hannah said to her as the bar tender handed them their drinks. Cian gave her a slight look, but she couldn’t say that she was entirely wrong. Every guy she’d ever dated always loved the idea of being the one who would finally take her virginity, but Cian always froze up with every one of them. No matter who it was, it just never felt right.
”Still,” Hannah continued, taking a sip of her drink. ”It’s about time that you lost it, don’t you think? I mean… a twenty-five-year-old virgin? You have no idea what you’re missing Cian. Which is why I’ve brought you here tonight.” Hannah looked over at Cian, giving her a smile that immediately told Cian she was up to something.
”Please don’t try to set me up with someone again… you remember what happened the last time,” Cian warned. Taking a sip of her own drink.
”Okay, so the last guy turned out to be a little weird…”
”A little?”
Hannah gave her a pointed look. ”We’ll find someone better this time… what about that guy over there?”
”I think that’s a woman…” Cian said, squinting.
”Oh… wow. Okay, ooh… what about him? He’s really eying you up…”
Looking over to where Hannah had indicated, Cian’s face flushed when she saw exactly who she was talking about. ”He looks a little old for me…” The man was extremely handsome with a touch of gray in his black hair. He looked strong, that was for sure, but he looked like he was about twice Cian’s age. When her eyes met his, she quickly turned her face away, having seen the devilishly handsome smile that crossed his face when their eyes met. Heat flashed across her face, but a shiver shot down her spine.
”What are you, twelve? Plenty of middle-aged men would die to get into bed with someone like you. Go talk to him.”
”I don’t know…” Cian said, looking down at her drink. Cian wasn’t exactly an angel and wasn’t entirely innocent, something that her stepmother would certainly attest to. Even if she was a virgin, she’d still done her fair share of messing around, but she wasn’t exactly up for it tonight.
”What is with you? You used to be so much fun. It’s like, ever since you got into that accident, you’re just so… blah.”
”What? I am not ‘blah.’ What are you talking about?” Cian responded, though she knew it was true. She hadn’t quite been herself since the accident, if only because she was trying to figure out what the hell had happened that night. The cause of the accident was a mystery in itself, but the biggest mystery of all was whoever… or whatever had pulled her out of the wreck just moments before the car burst into flames.
Everyone had insisted that she was alone when the paramedics arrived. They thought that she pulled herself out of the car or that she’d been ejected from it during the crash, but she knew what she saw. She wasn’t stupid though. She’d told everyone that there had been a man, but she knew that wasn’t entirely the truth. Her rescuer had been… ethereal… angelic, even, with jet black wings that enveloped her protectively, shielding her from the blast of the car as it erupted into a fiery inferno before she’d blacked out. It had been weeks ago, but Cian was still trying to work out what had happened, to the point that she kept having weird dreams about the incident.
”You are too. But it doesn’t matter if you go over there now… because Mr. Hot Stuff is coming to you.”
”What-“ Turning around, there he was, coming right toward her with a strong determination in his eyes. When she looked back toward Hannah, her friend was already gone, probably off to find someone to dance with. ”Great, thanks, Hannah,” she said with a sigh.
”Can I get you a drink?”
Looking at her new admirer, Cian tried not to be so unnerved by his gaze. His eyes looked to be a dark gray, his gaze enveloping her and pulling her in. A part of her wanted nothing to do with him. He was bad news and she knew that she should walk away. Hell, a part of her was telling her to get as far away as she possibly could, but something was pulling her in and she found herself unable to do so. He was so dark and mysterious.
”Thanks, but no thanks. Already got one…” She held her cup up and shook it a little before turning on her heel to get the hell out of there. Her blood just about ran cold when he grabbed her by the wrist and Cian stopped and looked back at him. Her heart seemed to stop and she hardly even noticed anyone else in the room. Everything else just seemed to be drowned entirely out, her senses picking up on him and him alone.
”At least let me introduce myself…”
No… she should definitely pull back and get out of there. Why wasn’t she then? There was nothing good about the vibes that she was getting from this man. In fact, her heart was now starting to race, a clear indicator of her fear. The music was playing and people were dancing and laughing, but she hardly noticed any of it because he had her completely in his trap.
Maybe Hannah was right. She was too wrapped up in the mystery of her accident. It was time to let loose and finally give up on waiting for the right one. She was young and had her whole life ahead of her and this guy certainly looked like he could show her a good time. His hand felt inhumanly cold on her wrist, but unnaturally powerful. She knew even then that there was no way she could ever even dream of matching this guy’s strength.
”My name’s Valefar… and you are…?” He gazed at her expectantly, awaiting her response with rapt interest.
”Cian…” she said, her brows knitting together as her head feeling a little fuzzy. Her knees felt a little shaky and she didn’t quite feel right. Normally, she would have laughed at how stupid his name sounded. Cian was certainly different from most other names, but Valefar? His parents must have hated him.
”Cian… that’s a beautiful name. Not one you come across around these parts very often.” She swayed a little on her feet, not entirely sure what was wrong with her. She’d only just started drinking, so there was no chance in hell that she was already even tipsy. Valefar caught her as she swayed, almost as if he’d been expecting it. ”Are you feeling all right? You look a little pale. Why don’t I take you outside for a little fresh air? You look like you could use it.”
That sounded like an awful idea… but she really did need some air. She didn’t know why the atmosphere of the club was suddenly too much for her to handle. There seemed to be a war going on inside her mind right then, a part of her telling her to get the fuck out of there and the other part telling her to just give in and go with him. ”Uhh, yeah, sure. I could definitely use some air…”
When Valefar started to pull her toward the exit though, Cian wanted to kick herself. Was she stupid? This was how people wound up murdered in a back alley somewhere! This guy was probably a serial killer!
”No, wait,” she said, obviously catching Valefar off guard. He turned back toward her and everything seemed clear again. Her senses started to come back to her and he honestly looked a little perplexed as if he hadn’t been expecting her to suddenly change her mind. ”I think I’m fine. I really should go find my… uhh boyfriend and get going…”
”Are you sure?” he asked, gripping her wrist a little tighter so that she couldn’t pull away.
”Definitely. Besides, he doesn’t really like it when I’m around other guys. He’s the jealous type, you know?” Of course she was lying. She wasn’t dating anyone at the moment.
”Your boyfriend… really…” he didn’t look all that pleased and, in that moment, Cian wished that what she said was true. She really could use a jealous boyfriend at the moment to get this guy away from her. Putting on his charm, Valefar looked at her with that piercing gaze, but it didn’t quite have the same effect as it had before. ”Don’t you think a girl like you deserves better than a jealous boy? You ever been with an older man before?”
”Dude, ew. Why do you think that appeals to me? You may have a pretty face, but I bet your balls sag to the ground. And what the hell kind of a name is Valefar anyway? Did your parents not love you enough to give you a normal, human name?” Cian said, giving him a bit of a grossed out look.
”…what?!” Valefar asked her, looking shocked and angry.
Cian
