The house was buzzing with music and laughter, the warm atmosphere a stark contrast against the chill outside. Through the windows of Lucian and Adia Blackwell’s house, you could see snow flurries drifting from the night sky, landing on the already snow covered ground. It was the sort of night where the warmth of family and friends was more than welcome.
Of course Lydia had made sure she was available on the night of Adia and Lucian’s anniversary party. Lena had texted her and Facebook messaged her at least a thousand times just to make sure that she still planned on being there. As much as Lydia hated to admit it, she always did everything in her power to make sure she was able to make it to the Blackwell’s when she knew Aiden would be in town. More than once she’d cancelled or postponed dates just so she could make it to see Aiden. The only people who knew of this though were her closest of friends.
It had been what… a good twelve to thirteen years since they’d broken up? You would think that the twenty-nine year old would have gotten over her first love by now, but that was far from true. Their breakup may have been mutual, but that hadn’t made it any less heartbreaking. In the years since, she’d dated plenty of guys, but there were always thoughts of him in the back of her mind.
Long distance had been their undoing. Lydia often wondered how their lives would have turned out if she’d been a little more able to deal with the distance, but it had been too painful. Not to mention, at sixteen, she’d had so much ahead of her. She couldn’t hold on to a guy who was hardly present in her life. His visits were always too brief and watching him leave was painful every time. She’d thought that breathing would be easier when it was all said and done, but it had been a little while before Lydia was even able to think about dating someone else.
That was a long time ago though. She should have moved on and she did… in some ways. Okay, you could probably argue that she was still a little hung up on the guy, but it wasn’t like she had stopped living entirely! She had completely denied a marriage proposal just a few months prior though. It never would have worked out between her and Joe anyway though.
It was hard to deny that she and Aiden made great friends whenever he was in town and it was easy to fall into comfortable conversations and old habits with him. She never let herself get her hopes up though. Even if they were adults now, there was still so much keeping them apart. As much as Lydia would have loved to be with him, he was so far away. Her life, her family, her friends, and her business… it was all right there and he wasn’t. As a teen, she often wished he would come back to her, but she’d come to realize that such a thing was never going to happen.
She had promised herself that she would stop going out of her way to see him whenever he was in town. Over the years, the pull she felt between them had only grown stronger and whenever she was around him, she knew she was just opening herself up to more heartbreak. She had to block him out or she was never going to be able to find a guy to settle down with and have a family. After all, she’d always wanted a family, more than anything. She’d broken her own promise though. When she’d received the invitation, she’d been hell bent on declining it. One message from Lena was all it took for her resolve to wash away though. She wasn’t just there for Aiden and Lena though. Adia and Lucian had always been there for her and she considered them family. It wouldn’t be fair of her to skip out on their anniversary party just because she was trying to keep her distance from her ex boyfriend… the one who got away.
Getting there had been a pain; that was for sure. Her car had broken down just the day before, but her father had been able to give her a ride. Unfortunately, something had come up and he’d had to leave early. Unwilling to leave with him, Lydia had insisted that she would get a ride from someone. She didn’t actually plan on that though. The last thing Lydia wanted to do was bother someone for a ride, so she just planned on walking back to her apartment. She was probably going to need the time to clear her mind anyway. Just looking out the window, she was already regretting the dress she was wearing. Her legs were going to be freezing during the walk home on this dark, snowy night.
Standing there with a glass of white wine in her hand, Lydia was partaking in polite conversation with Sophia Rhodes, but her eyes did wander toward a certain someone every so often. She was making a conscious effort to not start following him around like some kind of lovesick puppy and had done a fairly good job of it so far. She knew she was going to regret not spending a little more time at the party with him later though, if she didn’t get over there and start hanging out with him soon. Lifting the glass to her lips and taking a sip, Lydia’s green eyes went back to Sophia and laughed at a joke she’d told… even though she honestly hadn’t been listening and had no idea what the joke was about as Sophia laughed as well. Lydia was, however, amused by her own foolishness and attention faking, so her laughter was actually genuine.
”Can I have a sip of that?” Lena asked, looking to see whatever it was her father was drinking in the kitchen. She had been off with Eleanor and Liana, but she knew that it was starting to get a little late and Aiden and Lydia definitely needed a little push to get them together. Of course, Lena was always trying to get them together and she’d gone through a lot to make sure Lydia would be there for the party. Well, okay, she’d really just bombarded her with messages about the party.
”You should go talk to Lydia,” the fourteen year old insisted, glancing over at Lydia and Sophia who were talking in the living room. A slight smirk crossed the teen’s face when she saw Lydia glance in Aiden’s direction. ”She looks really pretty in that dress…”
Lena’s attempts to get the two of them together were never very subtle and she knew that. ”Grandma says she’s single again and the twins told me she broke up with her boyfriend a few months ago when he asked her to marry him. That’s definitely a sign. She’s not seeing anyone, so now’s your chance. Just skip the whole dating thing and go ask her to marry you or something.”
Flashing her father a grin and nudging him with her elbow, she just wished the two of them would drop their ruse and get together already. They were adults now! They could find a way to make it work! Lena just didn’t understand what was holding them back. Lydia was way better than all of the other girlfriends her father had brought home over the years. Lena hadn’t like a single one of them and she was sure the feeling was mutual in many cases.
Lydia was different though, despite the distance between them. Lena had known Lydia her entire life and Lydia always went out of her way to contact her. Birthdays, holidays, or even just one of those random, crappy days when Lena posted one of those cryptic Facebook statuses… she could always count on a message or sometimes a phone call from Lydia, just checking in. Her father’s other girlfriends just made her feel like an after thought or a thorn in their side… like she was someone they just had to deal with if they were going to be with Aiden. Unlike them, Lydia obviously wanted her around. Now if only the two of them would stop being such losers, see that they were meant for each other, and get together already!
”I have an idea. Act like you’re going to walk by her, but ‘accidentally’ bump into her and spill your drink all over her dress. It’s romantic; I saw it in a movie.”
