”Ow!” Ethan complained, yanking back his hand as his mother slapped it away from the turkey that was fresh out of the oven. They were in Adia and Lucian Blackwell’s kitchen, the smell of Thanksgiving dinner permeating the air as Adia, Sophia, and Elyse were preparing dinner. ”It’s not dinner time yet,” Sophia scolded her youngest son, shooting him a look. ”You let Lydia pick at the turkey though!””Lydia is pregnant, she’s allowed,” Sophia insisted. ”Now get out of here and go help Luce and Leliana set the table.” Grumbling, Ethan skulked out of the kitchen as Lydia smiled triumphantly, reaching up into the cabinet to get a glass. ”What are you doing?!” Adia asked, making Lydia jump, like a child caught doing something they’re not supposed to do. ”I’m getting a glass…” Lydia said, only to have Adia take her hand and pull it back down before getting the glass for her. ”You should be sitting down,” Adia chastised her, shooing her toward the kitchen table. With a frustrated sigh, Lydia did just that, before the older women in the room could have a heart attack. Lydia didn’t want to sit down… then again, she didn’t want to stand up either. She’d had enough trouble getting comfortable for the past few weeks, but since the night before, it was even more awful. She was aching… especially her back. ”Don’t lift your arms above your had, the cord will wrap around the baby’s neck,” Ethel insisted, pointing at Lydia who gave her a bit of a look. ”I don’t think that actually happens…” she responded, shaking her head as Adia handed her the glass of water that she’d been trying to get herself. She’d heard plenty of Ethel’s old wives tales over the years, but that was a new one. A great deal had happened in the past week or so. Not only had she left Marc, but she’d moved in with Aiden who took great pleasure in arresting Marc the next day. The girls had thrown her a baby shower, none of them having been the least bit surprised that the baby was really Aiden’s, and Aiden and Lena had completely transformed Aiden’s office into a nursery. Absolutely everything was ready for the baby now that Lydia was free of her abusive douchebag of an ex. Well, almost everything. They still hadn’t come up with a name. Just about everyone had a suggestion… and just about all the men suggested their own name, especially their fathers. ”What do you think of the name Mustafa?” Lena asked. Just about everyone in the kitchen paused to look over at the fifteen year old who had been sitting there with her cell phone, suggesting names for the last half hour. ”Lena, you should be forever banned from naming any babies,” Mercy insisted, holding James against her shoulder and patting his back to burp him. Just about everyone mumbled or nodded their agreement before returning to what they were doing. ”Wasn’t it already decided that the baby is going to be named after his favorite grandfather?” Lydia’s father asked, coming into the kitchen to grab himself another beer. ”I agree, he should be named after his favorite grandfather. Lucian is a great name for a baby,” Lucian insisted, getting out what he needed to carve the turkey. ”That’s such an old man name,” Lena mumbled, rolling her eyes. ”Both of you hush,” Adia said to them, pushing a bowl into Henry’s hands. ”Dinner’s ready, let’s go.” It didn’t take long to clear the kitchen and living room, everyone piling into the dining room. Everyone except Lydia and Mercy, that is. Both of them lingered in the kitchen. ”You’ve been kind of quiet today. Are you okay?” Mercy asked her friend, arching a brow and kissing the top of her son’s head. The baby had fallen asleep and Mercy was careful not to wake him as she stood up. Lydia was uncomfortable and in pain, but she wasn’t sure if she should say something. It was Thanksgiving. The last thing she wanted was to tell Aiden that she was in labor and have him drive her to the hospital again, only to find out that she wasn’t even in labor. No way. She wasn’t going through that again! She was still being teased about what happened the other day. ”I’m fine,” she lied, but Mercy didn’t look very convinced. ”Mhmm,” Mercy responded, her eyes flashing to Lydia’s stomach. ”Sure you are…” Walking into the living room, Mercy laid James down in one of the swings she and Keiran brought with them. Praying he would stay asleep, she carefully backed away from him and joined everyone else in the living room. Getting to her feet, Lydia had to take a moment, bracing her hands against the island counter and trying to relax for a moment as she felt a cramp coming on. ”Are you going to join us, Lydia, or are you waiting for a special invitation?” he father called from the dining room over the buzz of conversation and clinking of Adia’s good china. She didn’t have to be in there to picture everyone gathered around the table, smiling and laughing… Lena probably getting nudged by Luce or Leliana for staring and drooling over Rhaegar again. ”I’ll be out in a minute,” Lydia called to her father after a moment of trying to breathe through the pain she was experiencing. She was determined to get through this dinner, damn it. ”What are you doing, giving birth out there?” she heard Cian call out. Setting a hand on her back and adjusting her position, Lydia was trying to do anything to relieve the pressure. Someone put on some old fashioned Christmas music and she wished more than ever that her pain and discomfort would go away. It lessened, momentarily and Lydia was able to straighten up before heading out to the dining room. Everyone was passing around bowls of food, serving themselves and chattering. Sure enough, Lena was sitting with her chin in her hand, gazing at Rhaegar across the table. Luce nudged her arm, causing her elbow to slip out from under her. Taking her seat next to Aiden, Lydia was doing her best to act like she was okay, offering him a pretty smile that she hoped seemed genuine. Hardly anyone noticed when Mercy leaned over to whisper something to Adia and both of them looked at Lydia from down at the other end of the table, narrowing their eyes. Sophia was loading up Lydia’s plate, saying something about how, when she went into labor, the hospital was practically going to starve her. Honestly, Lydia hardly even registered what she was saying. Lydia

Looking out of the window of his father's study, Aiden hit the 'end' button on his cell to end the call he had made to the station. He had just been checking in as his job as Police Chief never really ended... even on his day off. But he had a feeling that whatever was going to happen that day would be happening a little closer to home. Looking out at the light snow that had came early this year he just had one of those gut feelings that today was going to be THE day. It was a day after Lydia's supposed due date and he just knew that she would be having him today. He had been learning all about the signs even before she actually came out and told him the truth and even though she thought she was doing a good job at hiding it, Aiden had noticed them little by little as the day had progressed.
Stuffing the phone back into his back pocket he glanced once more out at the white wonderland, hoping that the roads would be drivable and then walked out of the room. The entire house smelled amazing with the different scents of Thanksgiving and the sounds of all of their family, blood and otherwise, came from the dining room. Aiden paused for a minute in the hall and watched them, not for the first time feeling lucky that he had been born into such a supportive extended family. Everyone in this room would go to bat for the any of the others at a moments notice.
Aiden watched as Henry, his parents and Mercy and Lena walked out of the kitchen and found their places at the table and his eyes trailed back to the kitchen as Lydia's father teased her. He was about to go in there and see if she needed help, especially when Cian made a joke about her giving birth in the kitchen, but decided that Lydia would have called him in there if she were. So instead he took his seat and was relieved when she came in and sat beside him. But he could tell she was off, he didn't have to see the look on his mother's and Mercy's faces, or even the one on Kats to know that sitting here and eating a huge meal probably wasn't where Lydia should have been right then.
Under the table he reached over and grabbed her hand, squeezed it and asked quietly "Should I go get the car? I promise not to make fun of you this time if you tell me it's time." Aiden said to her sincerely. Sure he had thought it a little humorous that she had peed herself and thought her water had broke, but he had teased her in a loving fashion. But he knew that if she was actually in labor they really needed to get to the hospital before she was too far along for them to give her an epidural. Aiden really didn't want to watch her give birth without anything to help with the pain.

He had no idea just how comforting it was to have him take her hand and squeeze it. "I'm fine," she fibbed when he asked if he should get the car. "You worry too much." She was trying to make light of his concern, but she knew she wasn't doing such a great job of convincing him that she wasn't in labor. When another cramp came over her though, this one a great deal more painful than the others she'd had throughout the day, she squeezed his hand tighter than she'd meant to. Placing her other hand on her stomach, Lydia leaned forward a little and braced herself. She didn't know how long that wave of pain lasted, but she knew that it was longer than the others that she'd had throughout the day. Okay, maybe she was in labor and she should probably tell him that they needed to get to the hospital. The last thing she wanted to do was ruin Thanksgiving dinner though.
God, how far apart were her contractions? When this one passed, her hold on Aiden's hand relaxed a little, as did the rest of her body. Adia momentarily excused herself from the table and slipped out into the kitchen "Are you okay?" Eric asked Lydia as he loaded his plate up with stuffing.
"I'm fine."
"She's in labor," Mercy said, prompting a glare from Lydia.
"Wait, what?" Lena asked, pulling her attention away from Rhaegar for a moment.
"I am not."
"How far apart are your contractions?" Cian asked her.
"I'm not having contractions," Lydia insisted, face flushed.
"I've been watching her and timing them. They're about three minutes apart and sixty-three seconds long and have been for the last hour or so," Mercy said, holding up her phone. Sure enough, she had the stop watch going.
"Really?" Lydia asked, gritting her teeth.
"Sweetheart, I think it's time to go to the hospital," her father said.
"Dad, I'm not in labor. I'm not having contractions. Now would you guys just enjoy Thanksgiving and eat?"
"I just called the hospital and told them you're on the way, Aiden, sweetheart, why don't you go get the car and get it warmed up?" Adia said, coming into the dining room, just as she was hanging up her cell phone.
"No, I'm fine," Lydia said, feeling like this was the millionth time she'd uttered those words all day. She grabbed Aiden's arm, not wanting him to go and get the car, like his mother suggested.
"Would you just get out of here before you wind up giving birth on the dining room table and spoiling my appetite?" John asked her, practically stuffing his face with turkey.
"I'm not in labor," Lydia snapped at John, kicking him under the table.
"Ow!" he said, rubbing his leg.
"That's what you get for bothering her while she's in labor," Eric said to his brother, laughing.
Lydia probably would have kicked Eric too, but there was a very faint popping noise and her green eyes went wide as she practically jumped out of her chair. At that same moment, there was a splashing sound. "OH MY GOD, my water just broke..." Lydia said, shocked. There was also a sense of relief though, but that pressure relief wasn't going to last long. The chair and floor... as well as Lydia's pants were now soaked.
"Jesus Christ, it's like Niagara Falls!" Ethel practically shouted.
"Oh my God, can you fix it?!" Lena asked, wide-eyed and standing up to try to get a good look. Her statement earned her a few odd looks and her grandfather just shook his head at her.
"Ha! I win, I told you her water would break during dinner," Cian said to Killian, holding out her hand. "Let's go, cough up that twenty bucks."
"I'll go get some towels," Adia said, running off again.
"HOLY SHIT, IT'S EVERYWHERE!" Luce said, her eyes wide as she stood up alongside Lena to get a better look, craning he neck. It wasn't stopping and the realization that she had to get to the hospital was finally hitting Lydia. When she felt another contraction coming on, Lydia gripped the back of the chair she had been sitting in.
"Go get the car," she finally said, sounding like she was on the verge of tears as Adia showed up with the towels.
"Two and a half minutes apart!" Mercy said, holding up her phone.

"So your face crunching up so unpleasantly, that's because you're not having contractions?" Killian said grinning even as Mercy spouted off how far apart Lydia's contractions were and how frequent they had been coming. They had all been waiting for this moment even if she didn't realize it. He and Cian had even made a bet on when her water would break... he was still holding out that it would break while they were watching the hockey game later.
Katerina just shook her head with a smile on her face as Lydia was stubbornly denying that she was in labor, and as she kicked John under the table for his comment. She managed to cover her laugh with a cough, not wanting to be kicked as well by her friend. She looked up as Adia came back into the room and announced she had just called the hospital and then glanced at Lydia and Aiden, her smile widening. Lydia should have known that they would all be watching her and making sure she was taken care of.
Aiden was about to get up when Lydia grabbed his arm. He looked at her and said "Don't be stubborn Lydia, the whole room knows you're in labor. You can't just put it on pause until after we finish eating." He was moving to stand despite her protest when she exclaimed that her water had just broken. By her reaction he actually believed her this time... and the fact that fluid was now all over the chair, floor, and soaking her pants there was no denying it.
At Lena's ridiculous question Aiden glanced at his daughter and shook his head, saying sarcastically "Yes Lena, go get a sponge and soak it all up and we can find a way to put it back inside her... it's supposed to break, Lena." He almost groaned as Luce yelled about how it was everywhere. Their Thanksgiving dinner had pretty much turned into a three ringed circus by now.
Across the table Killian was shaking his head and forking over a twenty dollar bill to his wife. "Jeez Lydia you couldn't have held out until after we finished eating? You just lost me twenty bucks." He said in mock annoyance. This might have actually been more entertaining than during the hockey game though.
"Good thing I had the sense to put the hospital bag in the car while I was waiting for you and Lena to get ready this morning." Aiden said as he pulled the keys out of his pocket and ran outside to get the police cruiser... it was going to come in handy getting them to the hospital faster, especially if he used the lights and sirens. It didn't take him long and he was there, getting out and running back inside to help her out to the car.

As Cian triumphantly stashed her winnings in her pocket, Sophia got up to help clean the amniotic fluid up with the towels Adia brought. While Aiden ran out to get the car, Adia helped Lydia into the foyer, rubbing her back comfortingly. Lucian ran to get Aiden and Lydia's coats in the meantime and Lena was following Lydia, torn between expressing her excitement about the baby or her worry for Lydia since she seemed to be in so much pain.
"Can I go?" Lena asked, eager for the moment that she was finally going to be a big sister. Before Lydia could answer, Adia was already doing so for her.
"Lena, you stay here with us. Let your dad and Lydia get situated at the hospital. We'll finish dinner and head over afterward. There's no rush. It could still be a while."
"I don't know," Henry said, coming over to stand with his daughter while Aiden was still outside. "She waited an awfully long time to tell us and her contractions are pretty close together. She might not even make it to the hospital."
"What?! DAD!" Lydia said as she started to tear up. God, the last thing she wanted was to give birth on the side of the road. Maybe she should have said she was ready to go to the hospital a lot sooner.
"What? I'm just saying, sweetheart... you might wind up delivering the baby in the police cruiser in the middle of traffic." He put his arms around her, kissing her forehead.
"Would you shut up, you're not making her feel any better," Lucian said to his best friend as he came up and helped Lydia into her coat.
Just about everyone was up now, eager to see Aiden and Lydia off, the table empty of everyone except for Ethel who was still eating, as if nothing out of the ordinary was happening. She even went ahead and stole some of the food off of Keiran's plate.
"Don't listen to him, you're going to make it to the hospital, sweetheart. You still have plenty of time. You and the baby are going to be just fine," Adia said, brushing away Lydia's tears and hugging her. Lydia had always been like a daughter to her and Lydia took great comfort in her embrace.
Just then, as Aiden was coming back into the house, there was a loud bang and everyone looked over to see Ethan laying on the floor, having slipped in the trail of amniotic fluid leading from the dining room and all the way to the foyer. Eric, John, Jared, and Cailan each started to bust up with laughter while Eli stepped forward to help his nephew back to his feet. "OH MY GOD, IT'S ALL OVER ME!" Ethan said, looking like he was about to throw up as the fluid had soaked his entire back.
"You call me if you need me. We'll come by the hospital once we get things cleaned up here," Adia said to Aiden as Lydia took hold of her boyfriend now for support. "And don't drive too fast. Take your time, the roads are only going to get worse."
"Don't drive too slow either, unless you know how to deliver a baby in a car on the side of the road," Henry said to Aiden.
"DAD!" Lydia complained, fearfully wide-eyed, as Adia was ushering them toward the door.
"Tell them to come back with a bottle of wine. This wine here tastes like shit," Ethel called from the dining room.
"Grandma, that's not wine, that's tea. And they're going to the hospital now, not the liquor store. They're going to be coming back with a baby," Mercy tried explaining.
"We have enough of those around here, damn it. Tell them to bring back a dog instead."
Stepping outside, Lydia was trying not to slip on the snowy walkway. Walking out in the cold with wet pants wasn't exactly fun and, when they made it to the car, Lydia had to stop. Leaning against Aiden for a minute while the contraction hit her, she was gripping his hand again, trying to breathe through it. "I think I'm having second thoughts about having a baby..." she said, wanting to cry but holding it back. It was so cold outside that you could see your breath, the night sky obscured by snow clouds. She was shaking and trembling a little as the contractions were getting more intense. When it finally ended, she relaxed, but only a little. "Can we trade spots? You can have the contractions and I'll drive us to the hospital..."

Aiden was greeted inside by practically everyone crowded into the Foyer and just closed the door when he witnessed Ethan slipping and falling to the floor loudly. A smile definitely crossed his lips as he tried not to laugh at the kid but when Killian walked up behind Ethan as he was getting up and tripped him, making him fall all over again he couldn't help but laugh a little, even as Killian high-fived John and Jared. Aiden pulled his eyes from them though as Lydia grabbed hold of him and his mother began ushering them out of the house, he heard Lena say his name and he turned to her and said "We'll call you the moment things really start happening okay." And then grabbed his coat from James as they went out the door.
Killian turned back to the table at Ethel's comment about dogs and grinned. "We already have two dogs in here Grandma, oh look, they're even starting to whine a bit. Mercy, Keiran, you might want to pay attention to your dogs." He said as Evie and James started to whine, the noise finally waking them up. Keiran gave Killian a look as he walked past him and picked up Evie, putting her against his chest and patting her gently as he tried to put her back to sleep.
Outside Aiden laughed gently at her telling him she was having second thoughts about giving birth to their son. "I don't think he very much cares if you're having second thoughts... he's gonna come even if you stand here all night. Though I don't think you really want to stand here in the snow and give birth on my mother's front lawn." Aiden told her, trying to make light of a very nerve-wracking experience. Hell, if everything went great he'd be a father again by the end of the night. "Oh no, a woman's body can withstand more pain than a man's... I'd probably be dead already if I was in your place." He told her as he opened the door and helped her inside. He was anxious to get her to the hospital where she'd have doctors to help her with the pain.

"That's really not funny," Lydia said, but it was clear from her laughter, however tearful it was, that she did in fact find the mental image of giving birth on the lawn at least a little humorous. Getting into the car and trying to get comfortable, as impossible as that was, Lydia tried to concentrate on the fact that, when all was said and done, she was going to be a mother. She was finally going to be able hold her baby in her arms.
When he finally got into the car and drove off, Lydia took hold of his hand and held it tight. Being told how painful labor was hadn't prepared her at all for the reality of it. "I'm sorry you didn't get to finish dinner," Lydia said, for some reason worried that she'd ruined Thanksgiving for everyone. She probably wouldn't realize until later that this was about to become the best Thanksgiving they'd ever had. Right then, she was really in too much pain to think rationally, especially when she had another contraction. "Should I be timing these?!" she asked, squeezing Aiden's hand tightly even as he was trying to drive.
When her contraction finally ended, she let her head fall back against the seat, her breathing heavy. "We're not having any more after this," she said to him, shaking her head. "I'm never having sex again, Aiden. Oh my God, my dad was right, nothing good ever comes from having sex. I should have listened to him." Of course, her father had told her that about fourteen or fifteen years ago, when she'd first started dating Aiden. Her vow to never have sex again wasn't going to last very long either... not with Aiden around. Some might think that she was being a little over dramatic, but they weren't getting ready to shove a baby out of their vagina, so they could fuck off.
When it was clear that the other cars on the road were slowing them down, especially with the snow still falling, Lydia was more than grateful when Aiden turned on the lights and sirens, effectively causing the other vehicles to get the fuck out of their way. When they finally pulled up to the hospital, Lydia grabbed hold of his arm before he could get out of the car to get someone to help her in. "Don't leave me," she said, sounding rather heart broken, a distraught look in her green eyes. This was completely irrational though. Of course he had to get out of the car and go get someone or at the very least help her into the hospital himself because there was no way she was going anywhere by herself. Even if he did that though, she was still going to be alone in the car for all of five seconds!

Aiden did a good job of not wincing as she squeezed the life out of his hand as he drove. He knew she wasn't trying to break his hand on purpose and knew that what his hand was feeling was probably not even ten times as close to what she was feeling when her contractions hit. "Probably, but we're going to be at the hospital soon and they can pick up where Mercy left off. They'll only get closer together anyway." He replied, carefully skirting her comment about being sorry he didn't get to finish eating. He had a feeling that even if he told her he hadn't been all that hungry, which he hadn't been, it wouldn't have made her feel any better about it.
He did take his eyes off the road once, as Lydia proclaimed she was never having sex again and that her father had been right about it. Aiden's eyebrow went up at how ridiculous a thought it was, but then again she was in labor and he had read stories about the crazy things women had said during childbirth. Most of the time they never even remembered saying them. "You probably should have, but then you would have ended up as a nun in some convent with a chastity belt around your waist so that no man could ever touch you." He said aloud, though he had been thinking it to himself. He smiled at the thought of her in a chastity belt, but refrained from laughing at the image knowing that this moment wasn't really a laughing matter.
Aiden finally got fed up with how slow everyone was going, especially since he was in his cruiser and they were all obviously terrified he was going to pull them over if they went even close to the actual speed limit, so he turned on his siren and lights and watch how quickly they all moved out of his way. After that it didn't take them much time at all to make it to the hospital. Aiden had opened his door and was about to get out when she grabbed his arm. "I have to go let them know you are here and help you inside... you can't have the baby in the cruiser..." He told her gently, not wanting to upset her more than she clearly already was. He would have carried her inside but he figured it would be better for her to sit in a wheelchair.

"They should really just know these things and come right out," Lydia insisted, reluctantly letting him leave her. The second his door shut, she felt completely and utterly alone, watching him through the window as he made his way into the hospital, where the maternity ward was. Leaning forward and bracing her hands on the dash in front of her, Lydia was digging her nails into it as another contraction started up. It was honestly so painful that she wanted to scream, but she refrained. She was just recovering from that wave of excruciating pain when the car door opened. "You left me," she said to him as he and some guy in scrubs helped her out of the car and into the wheelchair. "I had to have a contraction all alone, with nobody there to hold my hand..." He had literally been gone only a little over a minute, two at the most. They'd been prepared for their arrival thanks to Adia calling ahead anyway. As he helped her into the wheelchair, Lydia seized Aiden's hand with the intention of never letting go. "I don't care what you have to do or where you have to go, you're not leaving me again. I don't care if I have to handcuff you to me," she said to him, her green eyes surprisingly dangerous as he handed off the keys to the police cruiser to the valet. When they made it inside, Lydia was just happy to finally be there, her worried about delivering on the side of the road now dissipating. Having preregistered, there was only a few things she had to sign and they were able to take her right back. "Listen, I need an epidural right now. PLEASE." The nurse who was taking them back surely heard this sort of thing all the time and was trying to do her best to make sure Lydia was comfortable when they got her back to the room where she would be delivering. She'd been through the tour and everything. Was the baby was born, the would be moved to another room where they would be staying a few days, until they were discharged. By the time Lydia was changed into a hospital gown and situated in the bed, the nurses were sticking her with all sorts of devices and stuff to monitor her and the baby. At one point, she told the nurse that they were going to have to work around Aiden because she wasn't letting go of him. Of course they'd laughed at that, but she was dead serious. When everything was set up, she and Aiden were left alone for a little while to wait for the anesthesiologist. She was dilated nearly seven centimeters now and sat there, propped up against the back of the bed, flipping through the channels of the TV with the remote that was attached to the bed. She hated how the speaker for the TV was in the remote. You could hardly hear it. With the remote in one hand, she had Aiden's hand trapped in her other, situated on top of her stomach. Setting down the remote, she let her head fall back against the raised bed and pillows. "Isn't there anything you can do to get them to get me the epidural faster?" she asked him, even though she knew that it was totally absurd. "Like threaten to arrest the anesthesiologist?" They were able to give her something for the pain through her IV and, while it did help a little, it just didn't cut it enough. Her pain was fairly constant and the contractions were just awful, but she refused to cry. "It hurts..."Just then, his phone was buzzing with a ton of new messages. There were pictures of all of them out in the waiting room, having brought tupperware containers full of their Thanksgiving dinner. Adia and Sophia had even made sure to bring plenty for the nurses. We got too impatient. We're in the waiting room. -Mom Is he here yet? -Lena Tell her to hurry up and push that baby out. We're waiting. -Eric Tell Lydia I love her! "No one is omniscient Lyd." Aiden told her gently as she let him go and he slipped from the car. He did his best to get in there quickly, and luckily seeing as his mother had had the good sense to call ahead, there was already a nurse or tech or whatever he was, waiting for him. The guy followed him back outside, where Aiden had to refrain from shaking his head at Lydia when she seemed upset that he had left her. This was definitely going to be one wild ride, he thought to himself as he helped the guy get her into the wheelchair. "I'm sorry, I came back as quickly ass possible." He said, trying to keep his tone light as she latched onto his hand again. Jeez her grip was tight.
Reluctantly he handed the valet the keys to the cruiser, but not before threatening the kid that if there was even a scratch in it the money to fix it would come out of his paycheck. Not that he could really do that but it was government property and would like to see it returned in the same shape he left it in. As they walked back inside Aiden leaned over the wheelchair and said quietly so that the nurse wouldn't overhear him as easily "Lydia, sweetheart, I love you and all, but you aren't handcuffing me to anything... that's my job. Plus, there is a bathroom in the room so I won't be leaving you. I'll be by your side quicker than you can say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious five times fast."
Inside another nurse had Lydia fill out a few sheets of paperwork and then walked them back to the room she would be having the baby in. Aiden shot the nurse a sympathetic look as Lydia told her that she needed an epidural right then but made sure that Lydia couldn't see his face. He completely understood that she was in pain, and he definitely felt for her, but it was a tiny bit amusing seeing her this irrational, freaking out about him leaving her... as if he would ever actually leave her again. But he would wait until later to tease her about it.
He was patient with her, letting her cling to him as the nurses bustled around getting her hooked up to this machine and that one and sticking a few needles in her and putting one of those hospital wrist bands on the both of them with her name on it. He was losing feeling in his hand again by the time they were finished and she was watching tv. Aiden gently pried her fingers loose, only to place her hand on his forearm where her fingers couldn't reach all the way around and block off circulation. "I can't legally threaten any of them with arresting them, especially when they are doing their jobs as best as they can sweetheart." Aiden told her, wishing he could do something personally to take away the pain for her. At least when she got the epidural it would hopefully help her out big time.
He sat on the stool one of the nurses had sympathetically brought him, seeing that Lydia didn't want him wandering away from him, and pulled out his phone to check the messages. He grinned at them and shook his head at the same time. "Cian wants you to know she and Killian have a bet going, and that you need to have the baby before midnight for her to win... also Lena is impatient and wants to know every five seconds if he's here yet. And the girls all want you to know they love you." He said then added "And Ethel wants us to bring back booze." He had a feeling that Lydia would be feeling the same way after all of this and be begging him for a bottle or two of wine.
He opened up a new message and typed everyones names into the recipient box, sending a mass message instead of responding to everyone at once. The only one he left out was Ethel, knowing that she'd probably say something about booze or dogs as as a reply anyway.
Just got set up in room, everything is going well so far. No baby yet Lena, be patient. And no you cannot go on a date Saturday, or until you're 30 and live on your own. I'll keep you guys updated.
He hit send then stuffed the phone back into his pocket and turned his attention back onto Lydia. If they both survived this he'd have to double his effort on finding the perfect engagement ring for her... and figure out how he was going to pop the question. Not that Lena hadn't been Pinteresting ideas for that either. She had way too many ideas for him to remember.

Lydia just sighed when he told her that he couldn't legally threaten anyone for her. "Well what good is it having a boyfriend who's Chief of Police if you can't arrest people for me?" she asked him, not arguing when he pried her fingers off of his hand only to place it on his arm. She thought about what she'd just said though and looked at him with widened eyes. "But don't you leave me. I need you here." She loved Aiden and didn't want to be alone. Of course, she hadn't quite registered that he'd told her he loved her earlier. Sure, they'd said it plenty... about thirteen years ago, before they'd broken up. Her love for him had never really gone away, but she wasn't going to walk up to her ex-boyfriend and tell him that she loved him.
Letting out a breath of air, she shifted uncomfortably as he told her what everyone was saying. "I'm ready to get him out now if it will stop the pain," she said to him, trying to make light of it all. She was about to tell him to tell everyone she loved them as well, but at that moment, an angel from heaven knocked on the door... or, rather, the anesthesiologist. "Oh, thank God," Lydia said, eager for some sense of relief.
The anesthesiologist greeted them both, shaking Aiden's hand as he introduced himself and started to explain the procedure. It took a great deal of effort for Lydia to refrain from telling him to get on with it and give her the damn drugs. Though she thought the idea of a long needle being shoved into her spine would scare her, Lydia didn't give a flying fuck. She did just as the doctor instructed her to do, really in too much pain to argue. With Aiden there to support her and help hold her still as they first gave her a needle to numb the spinal tissue, Lydia let her forehead rest against his chest, silent tears spilling down her face. She was just so desperate for the pain of her labor to go away. According to the doctor, if it worked the way it should, she would experience more pressure than pain.
When all was said and done, Lydia was able to sit back again, relaxing more and more as time wore on. She wasn't exactly comfortable considering a tiny human being was making his way toward her birth canal, but the pain had lessened a great deal, helping her to feel more at ease. She would take feeling pressure over pain any day. This time, when she took Aiden's hand, she wasn't trying to break his fingers and she was certainly a lot more rational.
A short while after Lydia was given the epidural, their family was finally allowed back. It came as no surprise when Lena was the first one to burst through the door. "Thank God, you're still alive," Lena said, rushing to Lydia's side and giving her a hug. She was extra cautious with all of the machinery everywhere though. "How long is this supposed to take?"
"Are you in a rush?" Lydia asked her with a smile, shifting and letting Lena squeeze into the bed next to her.
"She could be here for days," Henry said leaning in to give his daughter a kiss on the forehead.
"Thanks dad... that's a comforting thought," Lydia said to Henry, giving him a bit of a look. From the looks of it though, she wasn't going to make it through the night without giving birth. She was already dilated at eight centimeters the last time someone came in to check.
"I'm surprised that you're still alive," Henry said to Aiden. "When Lyanna went into labor with Lydia, she started throwing things at me and told me she hated me at least fifty times."
Lucian came to stand by his son, clapping him on the shoulder. "Nobody will blame you for breaking his nose for doing this to you, Lydia," he said.
"Hell, I'll volunteer to do it for you," Henry offered. Of course Henry would do no such thing now. He might have years ago though, if he'd known that Aiden was sneaking into his daughter's bedroom in the middle of the night and doing other things with her that they shouldn't have been doing.
"No thanks, I like his face just the way it is..." Lydia responded, looking over at Aiden and giving him a pretty smile. It was a nice change from the painful expressions she'd given him a short while before.
"How are you feeling?" Adia asked, observing the machines that were monitoring both mother and baby.
"Better, now that I've had the epidural," Lydia admitted as Lena let her head rest on her shoulder and she, in turn, let her head rest against Lena's. If someone who didn't know their story looked at the two, they definitely would have thought that they were seeing a loving mother and her daughter. To be honest though, that's really what they were becoming. Lydia had always loved Lena and, now that they were actually becoming more of a family, the love was able to really blossom.
"I hope he comes out looking better than Aiden did," Lucian said, taking a seat in the chair over by the corner. Adia situated herself at the foot of the bed, making sure Lydia's feet were covered up and warm enough.
"That's my baby you're talking about," Adia said to her husband. "Don't listen to him, sweetheart, you were a beautiful baby... after a few hours..."
"Don't lie to him, Adia. It was a few days. You were an ugly little bastard." Both Lena and Lydia tried holding back their laughter, but they were unsuccessful in doing so. Lydia let out a bit of an "ow" and held onto her belly, but it took her another moment for her laughter to die down.
"You're handsome now, that's all that matters," Adia said to her son.
